Whether you recognize the name from her finsta account or her stage name, Chxrry22 is definitely a name to look out for. From a lighthearted finsta name to being her stage name as she is an opening headliner for the Weeknd's "After Hours Dawn" tour in New Zealand and Australia, Chxrry22, just released her second EP, "Siren". Born in Toronto, Chxrry became the first female artist signed to record label, XO, which includes artists such as Belly and Nav after being discovered via social media. Unlike her last project in her last project (The Other Side) which had a much softer approach, Chxrry describes coming into this project wanting to sound and feel bigger. "Siren" captures the artist's tales of dominance, fascinations, romance, feminism, toxicity, and more through her sultry dark R&B vibe. The artist's exploration with bolder drums, club-like beats, and features with artists such as Vory and Offset supported Chxrry's intention to curate sounds that would have a powerful stage presence. The project totals 7 songs, each song telling a more unique and specific story than the other.
We had the opportunity to attend Chxrry22’s Siren’s exclusive listening party and here’s some things you should know about the creative process behind each song:
Ride 4 Me
Chxrry knew she wanted to establish her feminine dominance throughout the project so, she knew she had to start off strong to set the tone. The first song on the project “Ride 4 Me” is based around her current relationship with her boyfriend from Atlanta. Although she speaks on her personal romantic experience she wanted to put together a chorus that was relatable for her listeners.
Never Had This
This song includes one of the two features on the entire project. Including Houston artist, Vory, "Never Had This" Chxrry mentions this collaboration was long overdue as her and Vory had been in
communication for more than two years trying to figure out which track would be the perfect fit. While viewing an Instagram story where Chxrry had previewed the song and shown a snippet, Vory automatically knew this was the one. "He completed the story, because my original second verse didn't do that- it was just kind of like a continuation of the first verse. Vory wrapped it all together" explained Chxrry.
More
Chxrry describes “More” coming to her during a night she was riding around Los
Angeles with her friends. The song describes the singer’s regret in her involvement with a lover who seems obsessed even after they’ve parted ways and she expresses her disinterest.
Favorite Girl
The concept and story behind "Favorite Girl" stems from Chxrry's fascination and admiration of dancers. She reveals that if she had become a dancer, her stage name would have also been Chxrry.
Around
Believe it or not "Around" was a freestyle that Chxrry would describe as"something she would say in a drunk voicemail then be like "Why would I say that the next day?!".This short interlude was recorded using the artists' demo vocals as she explains every time she had recorded it prior, it felt almost too perfect and clean.
Do It
Tying it back to why she created the project in the first place, "Do It" was centered around Chxrry's commitment to coming back into the music scene a lot more powerful. She explains how the song showcases her versatility as the pop sound isn't one we hear from her often. The song is filled with fast moving energy and beats however, is "Chxrryfied" by producers Jacob Olofsson and Matt Cohn producing a "dark synthy vibe" as described by Chxrry.
Granted
The project is ended with "Granted" another freestyle where Chxrry shares a vulnerable side when it comes to her romantic life. She explains going through a constant toxic cycle and feeling as though "I don't necessarily learn from my mistakes. I feel like I am living the same story over and over again." The first half of the song expresses Chxrry's frustration and confusion as to why anyone would ever "play with" and "try" her. The second half of the song reveals Chxrry's faults as she shows a more problematic side.
Upcoming artist, Chxrry, is definitely a name we will be keeping up with after hearing Siren, a project filled with so much life, enticing energy, and and melodic fulfilling vocals. Siren is out now on all streaming platforms! Be sure to tune in!
